Voltas AC&R has two modern manufacturing
plants spread over an area of over 20,000 square metres.
The Thane plant was started in 1964, and the second
in 2000.
Product engineering:
Voltas has a very strong product engineering base, engaged
in design and development of new products as well as
carrying out improvements in existing products.
The strength of Voltas' in cooling
solutions likes in its highly qualified corps of engineers
in the field of air conditioning and refrigeration.
Their approach of intelligent innovation
and customized problem-solving is given full play through
use of advanced design software. These include the RR
programme for Coil designing, and Auto Cad Mechanical
Series 6 with Solid Modeling package ('Inventor') for
alternative designs and quick evaluations.
Collaborations:
Voltas' manufacturing capabilities focus on the products
of collaborations with world leaders in air conditioning
and refrigeration:
- Screw chiller packages from Dunham Bush, U.S.A.
/ Malaysia
- Vapor absorption machines, both steam-fired and
direct-fired from Hitachi Limited, Japan.
- Shell & tube-type condenser / chiller from Standard
Refrigeration Company, U.S.A.
The technology transfer, indigenisation of various components and vendor development
are carried out by in-house engineers trained abroad at
the works of various collaborators.
Component manufacturing:
The core strength of Voltas manufacturing is its ability
to produce precision and complex components in-house
by using state-of-the-art of machines and manufacturing
processes.
The various machines installed include:
- CNC horizontal machining centres
- CNC turning centre
- Fanuc tape drills
Coils manufacturing:
Coils
made from aluminum fins and copper tubes are made in-house
using:
- Fin press and hair-pin benders
- Vertical and horizontal expanders
- Automatic coil brazing machine
This results in coils of the highest quality, with various options such as louvered
fins, slit fins, sine wave / corrugation.
Vapour absorption machine manufacturing:
Voltas' manufacturing set-up has modern fabrication
facilities with Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, enabling
production of high-quality welds which can meet stringent
leak testing of the order of 0.00001 Atm CC/sec.
Performance testing:
Performance
testing facilities are installed for the entire range
of products, ranging from 5 TR packaged / split ductable
units to 1000 TR vapor absorption machines.
The various rating conditions are simulated.
The stabilized and closely controlled
water flows are maintained by digital control.
An additional facility of steam boilers
is also an integral part of the test bed facility, enabling
testing of steam fired vapor absorption machines of
80 TR to 1000 TR capacity.
The test beds are also capable of
handling hot-water as well as direct-fired vapor absorption
machines of similar capacities.
Other assembly
lines
In order to facilitate mass production
of package / split Units and different types of chiller
packages, well laid out conveyorised assembly lines
are used with highly skilled
technicians for assembly line operations.
Quality assurance:
Both of Voltas' manufacturing plants have been certified
for ISO 9001 : 2000 by TUV
of India.
Quality Assurance system ensures that
the products coming out of both plants are of consistent
quality and reliability.
At both the manufacturing plants,
emphasis is placed on protection of the environment,
with effluent treatment plants which operate continuously
and around the clock.
The statutory norms of Directorate of Industrial Safety & Health (DISH) are strictly complied with.
