|Voltas wins top Bry-Air award for
innovation saving over 60% energy
Voltas walked away with top honours in the Product Design category at the 9th Bry-Air Awards for Excellence. The award was given in recogniton of Voltas' oustanding energy-saving innovation, the Double-Effect High COP Vapour Absorption Machine (VAM) – yet another affirmation of Voltas' commitment to 'green' technology.
The need for energy-efficient products is increasing day by day due to the continuous increase in energy costs, and the growing threat of global warming. In line with this objective, Voltas developed the High COP VAM as a commercial offering, at its in-house R&D center.
While VAM as a category is already known to yield upto 60% saving over conventional cooling systems, Voltas' ingenious Double-Effect High COP improvement extracts 20% more saving over conventional VAMs.
The technology uses environment-friendly refrigerant (water), which has zero ozone-depletion potential, and hence does not contribute to global warming. The product is thus acclaimed in the 'green' products spectrum.
The Bry-Air evaluation criteria were 1) Energy saving compared to traditional solutions 2) Environment friendliness (3) Validation by a third party (4) Ease of manufacturing and serviceability, and (5) Feasibility of commercialization.
Innovative features of the product are
-- Falling film evaporator & absorber
-- Aerodynamic tube pattern
-- Use of Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger in place of conventional shell & tube
-- and high-efficiency heat transfer tubes.
The benefits to the customer are:
1) 20% energy saving compared to conventional double effect VAM.
2) The most optimized solution, with marginal cost increase of about 20% over conventional systems, and a payback period of about 6 months
3) The cycle works at low concentration and temperature of LiBr solution, hence there is no corrosion of internal parts, no fear of crystallization, and no need of complex control systems.
